My Writing Life

I believe that all serious writers have intriguing stories about how they began writing. As writers, we should always keep in mind the stories of how we fell in love with writing as a reminder of where we began, and as inspiration to keep working. My writing love-story “officially” began in college. I’ve always enjoyed writing, having kept journals for the majority of life as a way to help process my thoughts and feelings, but I truly fell in love with it when I was early on in college. I went in as an undecided major, and my third semester, I took a Jouranlism Feature Writing class because it sounded interesting and counted as a general credit at my school. Basically, I was hooked from day one. At the end of that semester, I officially declared a major: Media Studies: Journalism emphasis. As I delved into the world of journalism and writing more and more, my love deepened. Through interviewing people, and crafting their stories into written words, I fell in love with the story telling of journalistic writing. I realized that writing could be a method for sharing stories of the ordinary and extraordinary...stories of lives well lived, and of interesting people and places. I spent some time as the Features Editor for my college newspaper, did an internship with a community newspaper and also wrote for Odyssey Online (while they honestly suck as a representation of quality journalism or writing, it gave me an opportunity to get more of my writing out there). Fast forward to now: I’m a wife and a mom. I’m a stay at home mom by choice, but I’m still working to pursue my dreams of writing/freelancing, alongside fulfilling my dream of being a wife and Mom. My writing has melded and shifted with time, and currently, a lot of it centers around encouraging others who are in the same phase of life as me. That is the main purpose of this blog: to encourage others, largely moms and wives, based on what life has been teaching me. I’ll always hold a soft spot for journalism. It’s what showed me I could actually be a writer. It’s what taught me to love ordinary, everyday people and stories. It gave me a start and I hope to come back to it one day soon.

What’s amazing about writing, is that it can grow with you. The purpose and type of writing you do, can change with the season of life you are experiencing, so it never has to get dull! I started out by journaling the day-to-day, and went on to journalism, and now to blogging! I’ve even delved into writing poetry and epigrams. In my short “career” I’ve already written fairly broadly, and I can’t wait to see where words take me next! What about you? Are you a writer? How did you get into writing and what about it makes you tick?
